Tavoite
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand NATO’s operational orders and terminology
- Be able to read and critique OPORDs, FRAGOs, and WARNORDs
- Be able to write clear NATO-standard orders at the BN level
- Improve communication for multinational coordination
Kenelle kurssi soveltuu
The course is intended for reservists who are assigned in staffs in war time. The course is suitable for people who are interested in the NATO orderss as part of developing their own professional skills. In the selection for the course, priority is given to persons who commit to work in the course as an assistant trainer and/or trainer in the future.
The course is taught in English, so good oral and written English skills are required to complete the course. Examples of the required level:
- NATO STANAG 6001 at least level 3333
- Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level B1 or C1
- General language qualification at least level 4; preferably at least level 5.
Kurssin opetuskielenä on englanti; käännöstä tai tulkkausta ei ole saatavilla. Tämän takia tulee osallistujalla olla hyvä englanninkielen taito.
Esitiedot
The course is taught by experienced NATO reserve officer, with long experience in staff work.
Participating in the course requires familiarization with the distance learning package in MPKMoodle.
The course participant must prove his/her identity upon arrival. The participant must make sure that his e-mail address is correct on the MPK card.
Course participants are insured for the duration of the course (excluding travel to and from the course).
Course participants are not equipped for the duration of the course (= civilian clothing during the course).
There is offered opportunity to have accommodation in barracks.
Kurssilla opettajana toimii kokenut NATO-upseeri, jolla on pitkä kokemus esikuntatyöstä.
Kurssille osallistuminen edellyttää MPKMoodlessa olevaan etäopetuspakettiin perehtymistä.
Kurssille osallistujan on saapumisen yhteydessä todistettava henkilöllisyytensä. Osallistujan tulee varmistaa, että oma sähköpostiosoite on MPK kortilla oikein.
Kurssilaiset on vakuutettu kurssin ajaksi (pois lukien tulomatka kurssille ja menomatka pois kurssilta).
Kurssilaisia ei varusteta kurssin ajaksi (= siviilivaatetus kurssin aikana).
Kurssilaisille tarjotaan mahdollisuus majoittua kasarmiolosuhteissa.

Course structure
Day 1: Foundations, reading orders, and command relationships
08:00 - 08:30: Course introduction
o Objectives, schedule, and expectations.
o The role of Finnish forces in NATO interoperability.
08:30 - 10:00: NATO Operational Planning Process
o Overview of NATO’s Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD).
o NATO order formats: OPORD, FRAGO, WARNORD.
o Introduction to command relationships: OPCON, TACON, TACOM, etc.
- Case study: Applying relationships in practical scenarios.
10:00 - 10:15: Coffee break
10:15 - 11:30: Understanding NATO terminology, symbology, and annexes
o Key terms in NATO documents (e.g., “Main Effort,” “Coordinating Instructions”).
o Types of Annexes by branch/function (Operations, Intelligence, Logistics, etc.).
- Specific roles of branch heads in drafting annexes.
o Symbology basics (APP-6 compliance).
11:30 - 12:30: Lunch break
12:30 - 15:15: Reading NATO orders: practical session
o Analysis of the pre-course BDE OPORD.
o Group activity: Identifying key information and annex-specific tasks.
15:15 - 15:30: Coffee break
15:30 - 16:45: Interpreting command relationships and annexes
o Scenario-based exercise:
- Interpret the relationships (e.g., OPCON vs. TACON) in the BDE OPORD.
- Understand annex dependencies (e.g., Operations vs. Intelligence).
o Group discussion and feedback.
16:45 - 17:00: Recap and Q&A
Day 2: Writing orders and practical drafting
08:00 - 08:15: Review of Day 1
o Key takeaways and addressing participant questions.
08:15 - 09:45: Writing NATO Orders: the 5-Paragraph format
o Deep dive into OPORD structure:
- Situation, Mission, Execution, Sustainment/Support, Command & Signal.
o Annex considerations: Which annexes are required based on operational/tactical context?
09:45 - 10:00: Coffee break
10:00 - 11:00: Drafting a BON OPORD (part 1)
o Small group task:
- Draft a Bataillon-level OPORD derived from the pre-course Brigade OPORD.
11:00 - 12:00: Lunch break
12:00 - 13:45: Drafting a BON OPORD (part 2) + Peer presentation
o Finalize OPORD
o Short presentations by group & Peer Feeback
13:45 - 14:45: Writing FRAGO and WARNORD
o Receipt and lecture of BDE FRAGO
o Quick drafting of FRAGO/WARNORD from the BDE OPORD.
14:45 - 15:00: Coffee break
15:00 - 16:40: Finish FRAGO/WARNORD + Peer Feedback
o Groups finish their short FRAGO/WARNORD:
- Present quickly
- Peer review
16:40 - 17:00: Course Wrap-Up
o Recap of key points.
o Participant feedback.
Hinta
Kurssi on osallistujille maksuton.
Mikäli kurssille hyväksytty osallistuja jättää käyttämättä kurssipaikan ilmoittamatta siitä etukäteen, perittävä maksu on 35 euroa.
Ilmoittautumisen voi perua, jos kurssin alkamiseen on vähintään 7 vuorokautta. Peruutus onnistuu omalta MPK-kortilta, koulutuskalenteri.mpk.fi.
